Psalm 145 | 1-9
A Song of Praise. Of David.
145 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
Sermon Synopsis
Anniversaries remind us not just of time passed, but of faithfulness remembered. Psalm 145 calls us to look back so we can look forward, to remember God’s goodness and to pass it on.
David’s praise isn’t abstract; it’s personal. He remembers the moments God met him in failure, fear, and need. That memory becomes worship. What we rehearse forms us: if we dwell on fear, we become fearful; if we dwell on God’s faithfulness, trust grows.
Faith is never meant to stop with us. “One generation shall commend Your works to another.” We are part of that chain. Each of us stands in the middle of God’s story:
Behind us is God’s faithfulness.
Before us is God’s future.
Key Takeaway:
Remember God’s Faithfulness - Worship begins with remembering who God has been and what He has done.
Rehearse God’s Goodness - Let His past faithfulness shape your present trust; what you return to forms you.
Relay God’s Story - Faith is meant to be shared, not stored; commend God’s works to the next generation.
Sharing Prompts
Growing up we have pieces of our story that have scarred or have hurt us. What parts of your story have you avoided or rejected and what would it be to redeem it in the Lord?
We aren’t here by our own merit or strength, we stand on the backs of giants who have gone before us. Who was the person who passed the story of God to you? What about their story of God has been fuel for you?
What is the story that you feel like the Lord is writing in you? What would it look like to share what has been written and to invite others into what is going to be written with the next generation.
Practice
This week, practice the rhythm of Psalm 145:
Remember - Take 10 minutes to recall a time God was faithful.
Rehearse - Write it down and pray it out loud as gratitude.
Relay - Share that story with someone in your family, your cell, or a younger believer.
